How to select the perfect Kilim rug for your home?
The name 'kilim' or 'kelim' is Turkish, and comes from the Persian gelim which means ‘to spread roughly’.
Another definition of "kilim" takes us back in time with hundreds of years, when ‘kilim’ was called the fabric meant to cover and preserve expensive hand-knotted Persian rugs. The more expensive the hand knotted rug, the more intricate and colorful was the Kilim rug.
Kilims began as a fabric and later became the weaver’s rug which decorated and covered their floors. Though Kilim rugs are considered a classic, today they are extremely fashionable and very highly appreciated as floor coverings for almost any home area.
What is interesting about Kilim Rugs weaving is that it’s flat. They are produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. Due to the nature of the weave used, the designs on Kilim rug usually are geometric in nature.
